When I think about what it means to be a positive influence, it goes far beyond just doing good things in this life. To me, a true positive influence is someone who, not only impacts others for good here and now, but also helps guide them toward eternity—by sharing the message of The Gospel.
That message is simple yet powerful: Jesus came to this world, fully man and fully God. He lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again on the third day. Anyone who places their faith and trust in Him has eternal life. That’s the kind of influence that lasts forever.
My name is Rachel Mains, and I work in radio as both an operations manager and a host. I love this industry because radio is more than just sound waves—it’s a connection point. Radio gives people a platform to share their unique messages, stories, and experiences that genuinely make a difference in others’ lives.
Every voice that comes through the airwaves has the power to inspire, comfort, and encourage. That’s why I believe radio is such a meaningful way to be a positive influence in the world today.
If you’re thinking about stepping into the world of radio—or you’re already in it and want to grow—here are three practical tips I’ve learned along the way:
1. Learn about every role at the station.
From the receptionist to the station manager, understanding what everyone does helps you become a stronger team player. Radio works best when everyone—from sales to operations to on-air talent—pulls together. The more you know about the full picture, the more valuable you become.
2. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and technology.
Radio, like every other industry, is constantly evolving. Whether it’s new audio platforms, AI tools like ChatGPT, or social media integrations, there’s always something new to learn. Follow radio blogs, subscribe to newsletters, and explore how technology can enhance your role. Staying informed keeps you sharp and innovative.
3. Listen to radio—especially in your own market.
This may sound simple, but it’s essential. Whether you’re in talk radio or at a music station, regularly tuning in to others helps you understand what’s out there. You’ll hear new styles, ideas, and formats that can inspire creativity in your own show. Plus, knowing what your local competitors are doing helps you stay ahead and continuously improve.
If you’ve ever dreamed about having your own unique radio program, I’d love to help you get started. I teach a course that walks you through how to build a program that not only reaches people—but also stands the test of time.
